2008 Skills Competition and All-Star Game

Thank you everyone who made the effort and attended our 3rd annual All-Star Game on a rather chilly night. Hope all had fun and we appreciate the level of talent exhibited. This message, really is about you and the role you play in our league, Border Town.

First up we began with the skills...

Home Run Derby

A thriller, with 2 Falcons stealing the show. After Tyler from the West Division leader The Raiders set the tone with 4 bombs, the Falcons’ Winston jacked out an impressive 6 homers. Last up was Andy, also from the Falcons … and he stole the show from the defending champ with 7 blasts, the last coming on his last out. Let us not forget Luke Villeneuve’s from The Cement Heads monstrous homer too! Exciting stuff folks!

Top Three:

1. Andy Ruiz, Falcons 7

2. Winston Gayle, Falcons 6

3. Tyler Moe, Raiders 4

Most Accurate Arm

Several players scored early with 5 & 10 point scores. Again, our 2007 Most Valuable Player of the Year, Winston, was in the running yet again…but up stepped Cement Heads’ Luke who blew out the competition with 20 points, throwing two perfect tosses dead on target to break all previous records.

Top Three:

1. Luke Villeneuve, Cement Heads 20

2. Al Rawson, Raiders 10

3. Curtis Martin, Spitfires 10

Fastest Base Runner

2 time (2006 & 2007) defending champ – Winston (Falcons) again blew away the field for his 3rd straight title in a blazing 13.51 seconds. And this comes with all the bases five feet farther out than normal at 70 feet!! Astonishing athlete! Winston would give Olympian Usain Bolt a run for his money!

Top Three:

1. Winston Gayle, Falcons 13.51

2. Frank Gomes, Pretenders 15.25

3. Weeam (aka “William”) Shugga , Spitfires 15.41

3rd Annual All-Star Game

West wins! West wins! The Western reps win their first all-star title in a decisive manner as they paste the Eastern team all over the park, winning 26 to 9. All the Western bats were on fire led by lead-off hitters Eric Vit (Raiders) & Luke Villeneuve (Cement Heads). Weeam of the Spitfires hit 2 homeruns for the West. The West’s defence throughout the game was also stellar, preventing any East rallies.

On the East side – Frank Gomes (Pretenders) & Andy Ruiz (Falcons) also had 2 homers each. Both not just hit out the park but what seemed like 400 feet. Colossal hits!

West wins home field advantage for the tournament Final Championship Game. Well done everyone. Thank you for all so very much for coming, partaking in the events and the game for your presence and your fun meant everything!

To Richard Wojcik (Terrapins), we express sincerest gratitude, for none of this would be possible without you.

To John Hayes, our Umpire, we thank you kind Sir for being part of the Border Town family, we thank you for your wisdom, professionalism, generosity and camaraderie.

Last but certainly not least, let us not forget the ever-so-lovely Gayle Moniz (Falcons) who has graced our MVP/All-Star every year without fail, cheer us all on, paying no attention to other commitments or how under the weather she felt for it is for her, that we have some wonderful memories …some of which some attached for you.

Best,

Ava Wojcik

2006-2008 League Commissioner

2007 CHAMPIONS: Congratulations Generation X-Men!!!

The Dunton Sports Park in Mississauga held witness to the stellar playing of the Gen-X-Men, only the 2nd team in the league’s 18-year history to repeat with back-to-back championship wins.  The team seemed to save its best performance for the apex of the season as they strutted to a 13-9 win over the very formidable Bandits (with an unprecedented undefeated 2007 Season 17 wins and 3 ties) in the BTSPL 18th Annual Championship tournament.  To Gen-X-Men and the Bandits, you have graced this league with your incredible talent and skill.  Thank you, it has been a privilege.

To the 2007 3rd Place Winners, The Pretenders with a Cinderella like 2007 season advancing past the Juggernauts of the West, MIG Giants (who were an unbelievable 2007 season with Runs For 286 vs Runs Against 186) and unto get to the Semis, congratulations! What can we say about the Fantastic Falcons, 3rd Game Finalists ... Legendary in this league!!!
